TRA reaches 95th anniversary

August 1, 2026 General News

This summer the Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) celebrates 95 years of serving Minnesota’s public educators.
The Minnesota Legislature established TRA on August 1, 1931, as the statewide pension fund for public education professionals. Today, TRA continues its mission to provide retirement, disability, and survivor benefits and to assist members in achieving income security.

In the years since its founding, TRA has weathered economic downturns, adapted to technological innovations, strengthened its security posture, and grown its membership.

TRA provides retirement benefits offered through nearly 600 employers statewide and now serves more than 200,000 members and benefit recipients in all. Annually, TRA pays approximately $2 billion in benefits.

Thank you to the members, retirees, staff, trustees, and state leaders who have shaped TRA’s history and continue to guide its future.
