Data requests

Learn how to submit a formal request for government data.

Transparency

The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act and other state laws govern who can see data kept by government entities. Anyone can see and have copies of government data that is public, but the law limits who can see data that is not public.

As a government entity, the Minnesota Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) is committed to compliance with state law and with protecting the data privacy of TRA members. The following procedures and technology have been implemented to protect private member data:

  • Employee access to member information is limited to those who have a business reason to access the information.
  • Private data transmitted to and from TRA is sent using encryption.
  • Physical security and technological security measures are in place to prevent unauthorized access to information databases, applications, networks, and physical records.

The Data Practices Act distinguishes between requests for public data and requests from individuals for data about themselves, including data that may not be public. The guides below include instructions for both groups on how to make a written request for data.
