TRA board seeks candidates for 2027 election

The Teachers Retirement Association Board of Trustees is seeking candidates to fill two active member seats on the board. The two trustees will be elected to four-year terms, which will begin July 1, 2027. There are no term limits on board positions.

The application for candidacy is available below. To request an accommodation, call 800-657-3669. TRA must receive all candidacy applications by 4 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2026.

Eligible TRA active members will receive ballots and candidate biographies in order to participate in the board election this winter.

Each candidate must be an active member of the Minnesota Teachers Retirement Association (TRA). Serving as a TRA trustee does not require special expertise or experience, yet board members must:

  • Make reasonable efforts to obtain knowledge and skills that position them to perform their fiduciary responsibilities, and
  • Develop and periodically revise a continuing education program to obtain pertinent knowledge and skills.

The retiree seat on the TRA Board of Trustees is not up for election until 2029.

A candidate interested in serving in a trustee role must submit an application (located above) before 4 p.m. on Friday, December 11.  After the filing deadline, TRA will review candidate applications for validity and announce the confirmed candidates in the Winter 2027 TRIB and on TRA’s website.

Early October – The candidacy application goes live on the TRA website.

December 11 – Filing for candidacy closes.

Late February – The vendor contracted to administer the TRA 2027 election prints and mails ballots and election materials to TRA’s active membership. Active members may choose to vote by mail or online.

Early April – Voting concludes.

Late April – The contractor certifies the election results.

May 12 – The TRA Board of Trustees reviews election results during a regular board meeting. Thereafter, TRA posts the final election results online and shares the details in the Summer 2027 TRIB edition.

July 1 – Newly elected trustees’ terms begin.

Only active members can vote for active member representatives on the TRA Board of Trustees. The retiree seat on the TRA board is not up for election until 2029.

An impartial, contracted vendor will administer the 2027 TRA Board of Trustees election. The contractor will print and mail ballots and election materials to TRA’s active membership in late February. Active members may choose to vote by mail or online. The contracted vendor will count all ballots.
